Fred has been a resident of the Cleveland area since his birth in 1949. A 1967 graduate of Hawken School, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colgate University in 1971 and thereafter received his J.D. degree from the Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 1974. While in law school, he was a member of the Law Review and the Moot Court Board. Prior to his graduation from law school, he was an instructor of law students in the area of Research, Writing and Advocacy and furthermore won the Dean’s Brief Writing Award.
Fred is admitted to practice in all state courts in Ohio as well as the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. He is a past president of the Cleveland Academy of Trial Attorneys and a member and past Trustee of the Ohio Academy of Trial Lawyers, both plaintiff-oriented trial lawyers groups. In addition to holding memberships with the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Ohio State Bar Association, and the Cleveland Bar Association, he has been a representative on the Ohio State Bar Association Young Lawyers’ Section as well as a Trustee with the Cleveland Bar Association and the Cleveland Bar Association Foundation. He is a past chairman of the Cleveland Bar Association Judicial Selection Committee which has the obligation of interviewing and evaluating all judicial candidates. Fred is a life member of the Judicial Conference of the Eighth Judicial District and has served on various committees for that Conference. He is a past vice-chairman of the Law and Medicine Committee with the Tort and Insurance Practice Section of the American Bar Association.
Fred has periodically lectured to other trial lawyers around the state of Ohio and has published in the area of medical malpractice law. A partner since 1981, Fred’s concentration of practice at Stewart and DeChant is in the area of medical malpractice and wrongful death cases in addition to other types of plaintiffs’ personal injury work, including automobile collision injury, nursing home negligence, and premises security cases.
Fred has been the Managing Partner of Stewart and DeChant since 1996.
